A recent poll conducted by National Write Your Congressman (NWYC) has revealed a strong urgency among small business owners across the country for the new Congress to tackle several pressing issues in 2025.
With rising costs and a desire for a more supportive economic environment, these entrepreneurs are calling for a legislative agenda centered around taxation, government spending, and immigration.
Concerns and Expectations for Tax Reform
At the forefront of their concerns are the need for tax reform, fiscal responsibility, and comprehensive immigration policies.
Many business owners are particularly hopeful for the continuation or permanent establishment of the 2017 tax cuts, which they see as vital for ensuring long-term economic stability.
As Congress kicks off its new session, the President and COO of NWYC highlighted the eagerness among small business owners for positive legislative advancements that could enhance their operations.
He encouraged business leaders to actively voice their priorities in Washington as the new year unfolds.
With the return of President Donald Trump to office, representatives from the small business community are optimistic about potential reductions in federal regulations, effective allocation of government spending, and meaningful tax reforms.
Optimism Amid Mixed Economic Performance
These business leaders are looking to 2025 as a crucial year for their growth.
They believe that lowered taxes, a decrease in regulations, substantial cuts to government expenditures, energy self-sufficiency, and advantageous trade agreements will be necessary for achieving success.
The survey also highlighted an overwhelming support for several executive measures proposed by Trump.
In fact, about 71 percent believe that streamlining government agencies could significantly enhance efficiency, while nearly 70 percent support the idea of easing climate-related regulations to boost domestic energy production.
Alongside these policy preferences, small business owners expressed a strong desire for unity during the transition to the new administration, hoping that it will promote collaboration in a nation that feels increasingly fragmented.
Despite this optimism, the survey paints a mixed picture regarding the economic performance of small businesses in 2024.
Nearly half of respondents noted that their businesses remained static, while 30 percent reported downturns.
Only 20 percent experienced growth, attributing their success to carefully planned strategies.
Conducted online from December 20 to December 31, 2024, the NWYC poll gathered responses from 518 business leaders across 44 states.
A significant portion—61 percent—manage businesses with fewer than 10 employees, while 36 percent oversee firms with 10 to 99 employees.
The survey sends a clear message to lawmakers: small business owners are ready and eager for actionable steps in 2025 to address pressing economic challenges and stimulate growth.
